Jack is getting very used to the phrase "I dont care if you're not happy - (you can't have it/its too dangerous)". He gives up.

Our real struggle now is toothbrushing. I've tried in front of the mirror. I've tried tooth brushing songs. I've tried in front of the wiggles. I've tried 'look I'll brush my teeth first'. I've tried 'I'll let you play with the toothbrush afterwards' (we now have three missing somewhere in the house). We have resorted to the two of us holding him down each night and giving them a quick brush when he's too busy screaming to hold his mouth shut. I dont want to distress him unduly and suspect this is a tantrum but we make the process very quick and hope it will improve as he gets older (he is 16 months now). I worry we arent brushing thoroughly enough. He doesn't get any fizzy drinks or fruit juice, water and milk is all he knows exists. Any thoughts anyone?

I say things like "Quick, open wide! I can see Dorothy The Dinosaur sitting on your back teeth, I need to get her out" (Obviously insert apprpriate character dependent on the interest of the day ...)

I also use "Hey! There's that piece of banana you had for breakfast, let's brush it out! And the yoghurt! Quick, let's get it!"

etc etc It still works on my six year old!

Finn insists on brushing his own teeth, which is better than nothing but he is not getting a good clean. he's also started screaming for milk in the night again, so he is having bottle sin bed which is bad for his teeth. Aggh! Sleep or dental problems?

Yep, and they are even more interesting when you get to listen to them down a phone line and have no idea what has caused them.

Makes conversing with ones brother quite interesting.

There's also no warning of these toddler tempests. For that matter, are there warning signs that Cyclone Toddler is about to hit? An inquiring aunt wishes to know ...

We use say your "arrrggghhhhs" and then your "eeeeees" and then tongue. Gets his mouth in the right shape for brushing and he has really really sensitive gums and ulcers regularly so we have to be hugely gentle at the front and but quick at the back.

Mouthwash is his thing, brush his teeth and he gets mouthwash to gargle. YAY!
